Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Leaf blowers out of gas

Westlake Village outlawing all small, off-road engines

How dirty are those small off-road engines that power leaf blowers, lawnmowers, and some generators? If used for an hour, as dirty as a 2016 Toyota Camry driven 1,100 miles, according to the California Air Resources Board. With nearly 3 million in California, those gas-powered engines outnumber light-duty passenger cars in the state, 16.5 million versus 13.7 million. Fed up […]

‘Jewel’ of Oak Park returns

Repairs at Oak Canyon Park ready to begin

Its luster temporarily tarnished by the Woolsey fire, the Oak Canyon Community Park lagoon—described by some as “the jewel of Oak Park”—could be back to pre-fire luster by July 2022. Officials with the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District announced Nov. 11 that bids for the nearly $2-million project could go out in February, with construction starting in April and […]

Ex-deputy admits to hiding evidence

Barrios tossed negative drug test in trash

A former Ventura County sheriff’s deputy has admitted to concealing a negative drug test that would have proven a woman’s innocence. Richard Barrios, 29, pleaded guilty, Nov. 15 to one count of destroying physical matter with the intent of producing a false charge, a felony, stemming from a Nov. 12, 2019, drug arrest in Camarillo. He was outed by a fellow […]

Take your Acorn on vacation, even if right at home

EDITORIAL

Vacation. It’s something most of us look forward to each year. And if we can’t fly off to a faraway tropical destination, we can still enjoy a well-earned escape from the work routine—even if it’s just for the weekend, and even if it’s right at home. Whether it’s a trip overseas, a drive across the country or a day on […]

Dolphin friends deserve better

People should not support zoos or parks that take dolphins captive. When you take a dolphin captive, it shortens their life span dramatically. In the wild, they live for 30 to 50 years. In captivity, they only live for an average of about 12 years. It is also not fun for dolphins to be kept in a tank for their […]

During holidays, let’s be a team

I’ve been watching an inspirational movie, “For Love of the Game,” a baseball romantic story. I know it’s probably corny, but the part of the movie that really caused me to tear up was the part where the pitcher and his baseball team members pull together to pull off a no-hitter when under a lot of stress and pressures and […]
