Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Graffiti problem in Calabasas?

Does the mayor of Calabasas really wonder why he has a graffiti problem? Remember back in April 2018 when this very newspaper reported on the dedication of the wasteful debacle known as the Wallace connector trail? Most or all of the City Council stood shoulder to shoulder, smiling with Sheila Kuehl, our sheriff-defunding supervisor, as she recklessly spent $3 million […]

Likes city’s stand on environment

My name is Zachary Rosoff, and I am a junior at Calabasas High School. I am very passionate about environmental work. In addition to being student commissioner on the Calabasas Environmental Commission, I am on the board of the Calabasas Mayor’s Youth Council. I am also the president of the Roots & Shoots Club at CHS and am on the […]

Development vs. watershed

The Malibu Creek Watershed, at 109 miles, is one of the largest discreet watersheds draining into Santa Monica Bay. Malibu Creek and all of its tributaries wind through the Santa Monica Mountains and neighborhoods and eventually reach the Pacific Ocean. Many endangered and threatened species of plants and animals are struggling to survive within this watershed as development continues to […]

Appreciating our regional birds

I was very happy to see the recent letters regarding native plantings. As a board member of the Conejo Valley Audubon Society, this is something near and dear to my heart. It is so important: The society has established a program called Lawns to Habitat that provides qualifying homeowners with 40 one-gallon native plants and design assistance to create a […]

Target incident ‘not OK’

I write to support the changes called for by Lawrence Nance, Lloyd Hilton and Dr. Charles Kennedy and their families in last week’s Acorn. What happened at Target a few weeks back—three Black teenagers falsely accused, handcuffed and manhandled—is not OK. These three men wrote a letter calling on Target and the sheriff to take action to embody the commitment […]

Support for Chris Anstead

A recent writer questioned Agoura Hills City Councilmember Chris Anstead when he examined Rep. Mike Garcia’s challenge of electors based upon election irregularities. The letter writer made the contention that our country has serious voter fraud issues, and those in disbelief are “either not paying attention or outright lying.” In support, the author cites the Harvard-Kennedy School Project from 2019 […]

Dealing with that restaurant

A headline in The Acorn on Feb. 21 provided reason to write: “Defiant Agoura restaurant sued by county.” I am sorry for the establishment’s financial woes, but defiant? To slog stale beer to a patio full of non-masked patrons? The 60-plus patrons and those they then come in contact with are endemic of how virus spreads; not defiant, but reckless, […]

Pilot error caused helicopter crash, NTSB says

FINAL KOBE REPORT

One year following the Calabasas helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Kobe Bryant and eight others, investigators have determined that the pilot made a mistake by flying into a heavy cloud bank where he likely grew disoriented in the minutes leading up to the tragedy. Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others died when their Sikorsky helicopter lost […]

SHERIFF’S BLOTTER

Agoura Hills Someone entered an unlocked car parked on Chesebro Road on Jan. 31. The thief stole four boxes containing 156 spine implants and a box of paperwork. The stolen items were worth $591,360. On Jan. 30, a thief stole an iPhone, house keys, driver’s license, and debit and credit cards, all worth $1,175, from a shopping cart at Trader […]
