Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Kate Vadehra for school board

I would like to wholeheartedly ask you to help elect Dr. Kate Vadehra for the LVUSD school board. Why vote for Dr. Vadehra? She brings with her the unique combination of 14 years of proven volunteer leadership at LVUSD schools with her extensive pediatric medical background as well as teaching experience. She truly understands the needs of children, not only […]

Kowalski for school board

As I started looking into the upcoming election, I found a number of interesting races and candidates, but one particular candidate stood out among the rest. Kiyomi Kowalski, a fellow local mother, U.S. Marine veteran and community leader is running for a seat on our LVUSD school board this November. In getting to know Kiyomi, I found her to be […]

Menges for school board

My wife and I are writing to endorse Linda Menges for the Las Virgenes Board of Education. In addition to her years of volunteer service as a parent in our system, Linda has served the past five years on the Las Virgenes Board of Education. In that capacity she has developed outstanding working relationships with administrators, teachers and parents to […]

To your right

The radical left’s goal is to dismantle all the institutions of the United States. Cities are seeing mass protests, rioting, looting and arson. Stores and businesses are being destroyed. Police stations, federal buildings and courthouses are being firebombed. Statues are being torn down without regard for their historical meaning. Thousands of citizens and police are being assaulted or killed. Biden […]

To your left

Lately I have had to read so much from the conservatives praising themselves about how much better their vision is for America. So I thought it was time to give them the credit that they deserve on so many issues. Look at some accomplishments: a woman’s right to vote, African Americans’ right to vote, Social Security, ending segregation, the Civil […]

Amgen use of poison permitted

Large T.O. site gains exemption

Amgen, Ventura County’s largest employer, has earned exemption from a pending state law that prohibits commercial use of the newest and most lethal rodenticides. Assembly Bill 1788, which passed the Senate this week and awaits the governor’s signature, exempts certain agricultural and government activities from the pesticide prohibition. Amgen is the largest property owner in Thousand Oaks and controls more […]

High school sports go back in action

LVUSD teams resume workouts on Sept. 1

Fall sports activity has officially begun at local high schools. Taking a step forward so that fans can enjoy games again, multiple Agoura and Calabasas high school athletic teams began holding socially distant outdoor workouts on Sept. 1. Agoura girls’ water polo and girls’ and boys’ tennis teams practiced Tuesday on campus. Calabasas football, boys’ basketball and baseball teams worked […]

Social Oak Park pickleball players return to the court

Oak Park residents do love their pickleball. The low-impact sport has become immensely popular in the community over the last few years as a way for players to stay active and connect with their neighbors. Those players recently banded together to help the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District, which oversees the community’s parks, buy new equipment for the courts […]

Ronald Martin David

It is with great sadness that the family of Ronald Martin David announces his passing. Born January 30, 1948 in Alliance, Ohio, Ron moved to Los Angeles where he attended Cleveland High School as a golf stand out, a burgeoning musician often being asked to record alongside radio personalities and a hardworking young box boy at Gleson’s family-owned grocery chain. […]
