Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Affordable life in Agoura Hills?

I’m strongly in favor of the City of Agoura Hills’s purchase of a 1.7-acre lot at Colodny and Driver for the purpose of affordable housing development. The state of California is in the middle of a severe housing crisis resulting from a shortage of affordable units, and using this lot effectively would help. Why encourage residential sprawl that threatens the […]

Agrees that flow of traffic is bad

In the Jan. 9 issue of The Acorn, Rick O’Mara wrote about the traffic flow in our area. I agree with everything he had to say. There should be no reason that if you drive the speed limit that every traffic light should turn red in front of you. I want to add to Rick’s letter to suggest that this […]

No on Measure N

Measure N on the March 3 ballot bypasses our existing laws that manage the development of our community and gives the general public a clear say-so in that development. Obviously, this initiative is not in the best interests of the residents of Calabasas. I recommend a no vote on Measure N. AvalonBay Communities Inc., which owns the 600-unit Avalon Calabasas […]

Supports LVUSD school bond

We are fortunate to have the Las Virgenes Unified School District serving our community. The exceptional and well-earned reputation of LVUSD has set our region apart from most other areas of the state. Measure V was placed on the March 3 California Primary ballot to provide critical funding to ensure that LVUSD retains its competitive edge. Good public schools, in […]

‘Step up’ for the school district

Our family moved to this area 20 years ago, drawn by the promise of great schools and a community that works together to provide the highest level of opportunity for our kids to excel. We quickly learned that great schools do not simply happen on their own. It is up to residents to set a high bar and support local […]

Women mayors stand united

Over 100 years ago, courageous American women, known as “suffragettes” fought for the woman’s right to vote. One hundred years later, thanks to their efforts, we the women of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Malibu and Westlake Village have become mayors of our cities. In recognition of this unique event in local government and in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the […]

Tap-water issue

Las Virgenes Municipal Water District may say forget the bottled water (Jan. 9 The Acorn), but unless I missed something, fluoride is still being added to tap water, a point that was left out of the article. Studies have shown ingesting fluoride has been linked to over a dozen serious health problems, including reduced IQ, impaired neurobehavioral development and brain […]

Suspects booked

Two San Fernando Valley men are charged with burglarizing homes in the Westlake portion of Thousand Oaks. Christian Carrasco Figueroa, 31, and Ric Bruna Reyes, 26—a pair of Chilean nationals living in the country illegally—are suspected of breaking into two homes on Hartglen Avenue near Hampshire and Triunfo Canyon roads, one in October and another in November, the Ventura County […]

Malibu Riders get back in the saddle

Laura Toston didn’t lose any property to the Woolsey fire in November 2018, but the blaze still had a marked effect on her life. Toston is the owner and operator of Malibu Riders, a company that offers horse-riding tours of the Santa Monica Mountains, which were burned and blackened by the flames. In the months that followed the fire, the […]
