Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Ale to the chief at Ladyface

Microbrewing has gone from a niche trend to a booming industry. Between Calabasas and Ventura there are dozens of businesses offering a variety of frothy, flavorful craft brews. It wasn’t always that way. Before cities were drowning in IPAs, pilsners and porters, there were only a few options for lovers of locally brewed beer. Ladyface Ale Companie in Agoura Hills […]

Paramount Ranch cleanup shifts into high gear

One year after the Woolsey fire damaged 112 miles of trails and 88% of federal parkland in the Santa Monica Mountains, a second phase of the fire recovery began last week with the testing of hazardous materials and the removal of debris from 30 structures and out-buildings, the National Park Service said. Strict environmental rules govern the treatment of contaminated […]

Residents can keep up-to-date on scams via hotline

Local residents have been the constant victims of scams, including fraudulent phone callers falsely demanding money as well as in-person lottery scams. To prevent further victimization, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has created a Scam Hotline. Scams not only vary from county to county, but also from city to city, so a scam hotline was created for every patrol station. […]

College professor out standing in the field

Three years ago, Moorpark College professor Katherine Courtney was stuck. Not in life or in her career, but on the other side of a fast-moving stream that washed out the hiking trail at Limekiln State Park in Big Sur. The biology teacher had traveled to the Central California destination as part of a three-day trip with her field biology class, […]

Reaching for new heights can make SAD sufferers feel glad

On the Trail

Around this time of year a condition nicknamed “SAD” often upends the well-being of sensitive souls. For some of us, myself included, seasonal affective disorder may be triggered by having to surrender the bountiful light and warmth of summer days. Each fall I fall prey to this blues-inducing syndrome. This year, I’ve discovered something that gives my spirits a boost, […]
