Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Understand the facts

I am compelled to respond to two letters published in The Acorn related to the wildlife crossing planned for the Liberty Canyon area, and another protecting our mountain lions and livestock. First, understanding the project of building a wildlife bridge will become clearer by checking the website #SaveLACougars.org. You will learn that no taxpayer money or government funding will be […]

Problems with wildlife bridge

Oh, how I wish I could be assured a land bridge for wild animals going over the 101 Freeway would work. If I thought it had the slightest chance, I would try to send a little money, too. I don’t have much, but I could send a little. Per The Acorn, the L.A. gangs are now dumping bodies in the […]

Reacts strongly to a display of animal trophies

My granddaughter and I had been looking forward to a delicious lunch in a highly recommended restaurant. Indeed, as we entered the establishment we were not disappointed by the lovely displays of nature surrounding the entrance. After being seated, we turned to look around at the many exhibits that were displayed. But both my granddaughter and I were devastated when […]

He opposes Jewish eruv

I expect the Sept. 12 Agoura Hills City Council meeting to address the eruv in the city, the marker that permits where Jews may walk on the Sabbath. I hope somebody brings up the following points: It is ugly. It can harm birds. Religious stuff on public property violates the separation of church and state. If the fishing line is […]

Area sidewalks getting better

With the bulk of the Westlake Boulevard sidewalk project complete, the City of Thousand Oaks is embarking on other improvements for pedestrians and cyclists. This time, it’s the north end of Moorpark Road. The $1.23-million construction project, which will replace missing sidewalk areas on the west side of Moorpark Road between Olsen Road and Crossridge Court and add bike lanes […]

Beware: Back to school means back to traffic

Here at The Acorn we couldn’t be more excited about the return of students to class. The end of summer is bittersweet, but a relief to many parents, especially those with younger children who’ve been underfoot since June, complaining about nothing to do. Let’s face it, classrooms can be a great home away from home for the little ones. No, […]

Sheriff’s Blotter

Calabasas A home on Queenscliff Court was vandalized Aug. 10 when someone shot a window with what may have been an air rifle, leaving a 1-inch hole in the glass and causing $800 in damage. A thief stole a woman’s wallet out of her purse while she shopped at Gelson’s Market on Mulholland Highway on Aug. 3. The purse was […]

Gang linked to slew of home burglaries

A burglary crew that struck at least 13 homes in the past year in Los Angeles and Ventura counties received aid from a cable company employee, police said this week. According to a release from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, the employee provided the crew with information regarding the daily activities of the homeowners, what high-value items were inside the […]

Students hit the books at Las Virgenes

The Las Virgenes School District’s 11,300 students returned to class Wednesday at 14 campuses from Calabasas to Westlake Village. The nervous energy was palpable as students sought out new teachers, friends and classmates. LVUSD superintendent Dan Stepenosky said 60 new teachers and staffers were hired by the school district for the coming year, including four new principals. “Our new school […]

Gruesome pet discovery in Agoura

A couple that live in the 30000 block of Janlor Drive in Agoura Hills told sheriff’s deputies they found their pet cat on their front lawn the morning of Aug. 17 with its tail cut off and its torso skinned of all its fur. The wife told The Acorn that she is certain the action did not result from a […]
