Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Salary brouhaha

Regarding the letter by Phyllis Myslik (Jan. 28), I am appalled to read that the city manager of the sleepy town of Agoura Hills receives such an enormous annual salary. In addition, his assistant receives almost the same amount. This amount of money is an outrage. I’d like to know what the manager and his assistant do on a daily/weekly/monthly […]

The Calabasas Rondell hotel

The Rondell hotel is inappropriate to build in that specific location. It is four stories high, which is not allowed by city code and no exceptions should be made. If the city allows one four-story hotel, it has to let others. The hotel blocks a beautiful multi-million-dollar-a-year view in exchange for, at most, only $625,000 in taxes. That’s a bad […]

Volunteers’ love of animals keeps California Wildlife Center relevant

Whether she is preparing a meal for an injured possum, checking on an orphaned duckling or tending to the sick raptors in the California Wildlife Center’s intensive care unit, Donna Mahan knows exactly what must be done to keep her feathered and furry patients comfortable and safe. Mahan is one of over 100 volunteers who assist the eight full-time employees […]

Complaint about the senior center

I’ve been a resident of the Mulwood area of Calabasas since 1971. I am happy to report that I will be 80 years old this year and am in good health due mainly to the fact that I am able to exercise regularly. I generally travel almost 20 miles per day to get to and from the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community […]

Local and state officials will convene at the Agoura Hills Recreation and Event Center next month to present the new facility with an award. Amy Brink, director of community services, announced that the center was the recipient of the 2015 California Park and Recreation Society Award of Excellence. The state program recognizes outstanding achievements in the areas of facility design, […]

How to win big with a losing ticket

Flying Squirrel

I’m writing this piece from the private island I bought with my share of the $1.5-billion prize from last month’s Powerball jackpot. Wait, why am I still working? Oh, that’s right, I didn’t win the lottery. I didn’t actually buy a private island or any of the other treasures I imagined would be mine. Oh, well. It was a nice […]

Pirates inspire

STORYTELLERS—Calabasas High School theater students perform with the acting group Story Pirates in a combined production of the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and Las Virgenes Unified School District last week. The students brought to life stories from LVUSD fourth-graders about the importance of water conservation and awareness.

Concert honors African American history

In recognition of Black History Month, the United Methodist Church of Thousand Oaks will host a special gospel concert at 5 p.m. Sat., Feb. 27 in the sanctuary at 1000 E. Janss Road. The public is invited to attend. During the event, local U.S. Postmaster Linda Catuogno will unveil a new stamp commemorating Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist […]

Taking off from the Amgen campus in Newbury Park, the pack of world-class cyclists will head south on Borchard to Reino before making a sharp left turn on Potrero. They’ll follow the winding road through Hidden Valley to Westlake Boulevard, where they’ll head south through the Santa Monica Mountains toward PCH.
