Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Eagles obliterate foes on soccer pitch

Oak Park girls’ squad roars to 9-0-1 undefeated start

The Eagles are undefeated. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Oak Park High’s girls’ soccer team is 9-0-1 entering its Tri- Valley League opener at 6 p.m. Friday at Santa Paula. The Eagles are ranked No. 6 in the newest CIF-Southern Section Division 3 coaches’ poll. The team has a collective grade-point average above 3.6. They’ve outscored teams 33-2. In other words, […]

PLAYER TO WATCH

Brittany von Schneidau is a talented junior stopper. Now in her third season on the varsity squad, von Schneidau leads a defense that has surrendered two goals in 10 games. The 17-yearold started playing soccer at 6. She now has multiple Division I scholarship offers. She’s trusting her coaches and improving her communication skills on the pitch. An animal lover, […]

Checking the price is right job for Oak Park pair

Oak Park residents Mary Ann and John Cossentine get up at the crack of dawn six days a week and drive from gas station to gas station, recording the rise and fall of gasoline prices for a tracking firm in Oklahoma. The part-time job, which they’ve held for about 10 years, is far removed from what they used to do […]

Oak Park thieves apprehended

Police have arrested four teenagers on charges of robbing an Oak Park home. The Conifer Street robbery happened several months ago but wasn’t reported until recently, when the homeowner noticed a missing firearm. After a two-week investigation, Thousand Oaks police detectives apprehended 18-year-olds Jack Hannah and Alexander Alger and two 17-year-olds on suspicion of breaking into the home and stealing […]

Calabasas-Old Topanga feud is back

Building offcials irked by illegal construction

A dispute between the City of Calabasas and some residents who live in an eclectic rural neighborhood established prior to incorporation continues to percolate. A disagreement over sewer system and other building laws was settled three years ago, but in a new conflict at Old Topanga, a home at 23408 Valdez Road has been targeted for demolition due to nearly […]

Irwin joins crowded race in 44th

As more competitors line up to represent the 44th District in the California Assembly, threeterm Thousand Oaks City Councilmember Jacqui Irwin said the timing is perfect to launch her bid for the hotly contested seat. Irwin, 52, will run as a Democrat in her first bid for partisan office. She’s among six early contenders for the seat currently held by […]

A step in the right direction

In a community that’s seen its share of teen suicides and drug overdoses, any effort that seeks to deal with the problem is a good one. The Agoura Hills Community Services Coalition was created two years ago to look at the issues that lead to teen drug use and other dangerous behaviors. In its goal to help the city’s at-risk […]

Readers favor Westlake center

I must comment on Ms. Erickson’s letter slamming the City Council for approving a fast-food restaurant in our new Target shopping center. Was she one of the residents who attempted to recall the council that approved Costco? Is she now a faithful Costco shopper? Our city councils have been very consistent in making the correct choices for the good of […]

The dog days of Christmas

The front page photo of The Acorn dated Jan. 2 shows an out-of-town dog owner disobeying the rules and laws of Reyes Adobe Park. Cute photo though. Unless there was some type of dog exhibit occurring the day after Christmas that I was not aware of, I apologize for this article. If there was no exhibit occurring, the photographer should […]
