Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Evenings bring quality time to Kate and Tori Kuykendall and their three children. After a long day at work and school, the family gathers for dinner and conversation on the back porch of their Agoura Hills home before night settles in. Life was not always idyllic for the Kuykendalls, who met at a San Francisco Gay Pride parade 10 years […]

The Calabasas City Council approved a new wireless telecommunications tower next to the Calabasas Country Club on Park Entrada. Verizon Wireless requested permission to install a 55-foottall tower with 12 panel antennas within a city recreation zone in the 4500 block of Park Entrada. The tower will be disguised as a pine tree for aesthetic reasons. After the tower application […]

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the single-engine aircraft occupied by James Ayers of Newbury Park and Donald “Craig” Tempelton of Agoura Hills crashed and burned on […]

Rural property should have been left as open space

The Chesebro Meadow is home to deer and serves as valuable grasslands for raptors. It is a critical part of the only functioning wildlife corridor in our national park. Mountain lion P12 crossed here in 2009, bringing new genetic viability to the mountain lion population in our national park. A 2007 National Park Service letter on the Liberty Canyon Wildlife […]

Old Agoura not happy about city’s decision

The Old Agoura Homeowners Association board of directors is extremely exasperated at the outcome of our quest to preserve the Chesebro Meadow as an open space buffer to an existing wildlife corridor and planned wildlife-only tunnel under the freeway. Thirty years ago, one of our members chained himself to an ancient oak tree while developer Jerry Oren’s crew cut down […]

Liberty Canyon parade a source of real pride

We have a very close-knit, loving community here in Liberty Canyon. My fiancé, Paul Melograno, and I have lived here for 11 years. For the past number of years, a few days prior to July 4, a sign appears at the corner of Liberty Canyon and Country Glen letting all of the residents know to meet at 10 a.m. on […]

Dangerous turn out of Agoura shopping mall

This past week, my husband was involved in a terrible accident on Thousand Oaks Boulevard while attempting to make a left turn out of the Vons parking lot. Depending on the time of day, this can be quite a task and dangerous, especially since parking is allowed on T.O. Boulevard immediately to the left of the driveway for the gym. […]

Who began spying on whom?

With regard to Mr. Matthew Toomey’s letter (“Snoop dupe,” in the July 3 edition of The Acorn), his statement that “wholesale spying on all Americans was instigated with full approval of the president of the United States” is correct, except that it was not by President Obama but by President George W. Bush. PRISM was a secret national security electronic […]

Immigration law will have local consequences

While reading about the proposed Maricopa School expansion, the concerns of increased traffic and the constant threat of development that plague our community, I was curious if anyone is paying attention to what’s going on right now in Washington D.C., a debate that threatens every American citizen’s quality of life and ability to compete in an everchanging competitive workforce. Historic […]
