Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

She has been awarded a dean’s scholarship from USC. At USC Megan will be enrolled in the thematic option program, an interdisciplinary honors program. In addition, she […]

Pavley played the blame game

Sen. Pavley’s guest editorial is a continuation of the infantile justifications that have precipitated the very crisis Ms. Pavley decries. Namely: •”The Republicans made me do it.” •”It’s the Republicans’ fault for not agreeing with me and others who think as I do.” •”It’s all because the power the minority party exercises is too great.” •”Don’t blame me—the minority/governor did […]

Defending Oak Park water tank

It is time for the NIMBYs and whiners to stop complaining. You have had ample time, information and opportunity over the past few years to voice your opinions, concerns, outrage and anything else you thought pertinent to change the Triunfo board’s decision on the location of the new Oak Park water tank. You failed to attend every meeting of the […]

Remembering the good ol’ days

William O. Felsman’s letter (July 9) brought back memories of my boyhood life in Western North Carolina. I also owned a Boy Scout knife, but I didn’t throw it at trees. It had a screwdriver/can opener, a leather punch awl and a large blade I kept as sharp as I could so I could clean trout we caught in mountain […]

The facts about pot dispensary

Regarding your story last week, “Westlake City Council nixes medical marijuana dispensary,” these are the facts. To open a medical marijuana collective in Los Angeles County you must have a state seller’s permit, a nonprofit mutual benefit corporation set up, liability insurance for a collective and a lease from a building owner spelling out medical marijuana collective operations. In some […]

One businessman’s success story

On behalf of our 1,500 member Chamber of Commerce, I want to congratulate one of our members, Paul Berkovitz, in gaining approval of his dog care business, Camp Bow Wow, to open at another Chamber member’s building located at 29348 Roadside Drive in Agoura Hills near the 101 freeway. Paul came to me at the Chamber many months ago with […]

Last week’s cell tower editorial failed to connect with readers

It’s terribly disappointing that The Acorn would publish such a poorly researched editorial last week about the dangers of cellphone tower radiation. You are certainly hurting your journalistic credibility when you write things like “there are no studies” proving harm from such towers. With a simple Google search, you could find hundreds of studies, actually, conducted by independent agencies—not hired […]

Cellphone use is volulntary, cell tower exposure is not

NP Thank you for last week’s editorial regarding cellphones and the disputed antennas to be placed in our children’s playgrounds. The article made some great points. However, it also made an egregious error by saying there was a lack of studies and evidence on the harmful effects of cell antennas on humans. It correctly pointed out that cell phones, held […]

Props to the city of Westlake Village

What an awesome community we live in. My husband and I attended the recent Friday Westlake Village TGIF concert. The entertainment was put on by the Cabrillo Musical Theater. The music was absolutely outstanding. The display of talent from all the age groups was so very impressive. It made for a very enjoyable evening. We are so very fortunate to […]

Oak Park man returns to the Philippines to help rebuild villages

As a child growing up in the Philippines, Edwin Velarde waited in lines for food and for vaccinations. He had no idea that one day he would help provide some of those same services. Velarde, who owns Oak Park Family Dentistry with his wife, Dr. Cristina Velarde, has worked on several community service projects in the Philippines through the Rotary […]
