Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

There’s no ‘free pass’ for developers

As founding council members of Calabasas and member of the City Council that voted for the city’s current General Plan, we believe that it’s necessary to answer Toby Keeler’s angry and misleading letter to the editor of Sept. 6, “No free pass for developers.” Mr. Keeler asserts that the city’s efforts to transition from a performancebased to a policybased General […]

Glad Klessig’s running again

We, like most of the Westlake Village residents, are very pleased to hear that Philippa Klessig has filed to run a second term on City Council. She has been a tremendous asset to our community, not just with her involvement and dedication, but in all she has accomplished in her first term. She is a team player who has worked […]

Supervisor does a lot for you

As former office manager for Supervisor Linda Parks I am compelled to respond to Dina Adler’s complaint in Sept. 6 letters regarding an unreturned phone call. Ms. Adler needs to understand just how hard the supervisor and her staff work. The supervisor, in addition to serving as chair for the board, serves on more than a dozen boards and commissions. […]

Absurdity of ‘supermajority’

It amazes me that apparently few seem to realize why it is so difficult to pass a budget in this fine state of ours. It’s the ridiculous “supermajority” requirement. “Supermajorities” are constitutional, of course, and they were even specifically included in the constitution for things like overriding a veto or impeaching a president, things that you do not want to […]

Another word on those chem trails

Reading the letter in this week’s Acorn, I had to shake my head at the close-minded people who only believe in what they are told to. The Sept. 13 letter written by R. Stilson, “Doesn’t buy conspiracy theory,” gets under my skin. How someone can call any letter outside the norm “garbage” shows a lack of contemplation and imagination. I […]

Wake up: Kids are drinking

We’re all at fault when teens consume alcohol. There are many reasons why, and many ways to help prevent dangerous behavior. First, acknowledge that they’re drinking. Chances are your own kids have tried alcohol. Second, don’t think that parties today are like the ones you attended as a kid. These gatherings go way beyond “spin the bottle” or “truth or […]

Mike Schmanski

Mike Schmanski, a Realtor in Rodeo Realty’s Calabasas office, had an outstanding turnout as he continued his tradition of giving back to his community by serving In-N-Out burgers to friends and neighbors at his annual “Neighborhood Appreciation” cookout. “My neighbors are simply the best, and it is my way of thanking them for their continued support,” said Schmanski. “The smiles […]
