Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Congratulations to Don Zimring

It is with great pleasure that I congratulate Dr. Don Zimring on his promotion to superintendent of the Las Virgenes Unified School District. I have been working with Dr. Zimring on a multitude of projects over the past nine years, first as the president of Agoura High School’s Charger Circle, and then as a board member of the Las Virgenes […]

Festivities blocked him from his home

Is this the home of the free? Apparently not if one lives off of Paul Revere Drive in Calabasas. About 9 p.m. on July 4, I was returning home from a friend’s house. Approaching Paul Revere Drive on Mulholland Highway, where I need to make a right turn to get to my home, my way was blocked by a van […]

No need to be rude about it!

Since it is summer, you can expect to see families outside, people visiting with neighbors and kids playing with friends during the evening hours. Many parents have found themselves having to signal to drivers in residential neighborhoods to slow down in the presence of kids. I found myself in the same situation recently, and was appalled at the response from […]

Conspiracy charges are unfounded

In response to Carrie Rackow’s letter of July 5, there is not one specific example as to who in the television media (is she referring to ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox or MSNBC?) is “under the control of a few wealthy corporate and individual conservative ideologies.” She does not cite any illustrations of “right wing deception, fear mongering and outright […]

Demise of our culture is to blame

This letter is in response to Carrie Rackow’s letter of July 5. She states: ‘The Bush administration has been systematically destroying the foundation that this great nation was built on.” Carrie, I don’t think it’s the Republicans that have destroyed our foundation. It is our permissive culture as your nemesis Bill O’Reilly stated in a recent column speaking about the […]

The essential skink

In these days of long light and hot sun one often hears complaints about the heat, but not all inhabitants of the Santa Monica Mountains disdain the summer months. Walking through the blazing chaparral at midday, reptiles may be the only other intrepid mountain inhabitants you encounter. When all of nature is taking a siesta, the only movement you detect […]

It’s summertime, and livin’s not all that easy

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy” begins a George Gershwin song that many of us can hum. When it comes to California’s four indistinct seasons, a majority of residents might cite summer as their favorite time of year. But to others, summer isn’t such a hot time. If you have children, July and August can be a 62-day challenge, and […]
