Winter wonderland

ICING ON THE CAKE- Yesterday’s arctic storm blew in a nasty chill. At left,  Acorn photographer Jann Hendry witnessed snow, sleet and hail fall on Kanan Road just south of Cornell. The mush collected on the ground. Below that, James Hampton, a resident of Triunfo Drive in Agoura Hills, shot a photo of his daughter, Kayla, standing beneath the icicle-laden branches […]

Residents draw the line over new religious marker

Jewish 'eruv' welcome to some, but not to others

Fishing line recently installed above streets in Agoura Hills, Oak Park and part of Westlake Village is intended to enhance the Sabbath for local Orthodox Jews. But some other residents are unhappy with the nylon filament that crisscrosses about three square miles of the community. During the Sabbath, from sundown Friday night to sunset Saturday, Orthodox law forbids Jews to carry […]

When parents take responsibility

With teenage drinking parties on the rise in Agoura Hills, city officials last week considered adopting a “social host ordinance.” A social host ordinance would hold parents responsible if teenagers are caught drinking alcohol at their home–and sometimes causing a ruckus in the neighborhood. The hosts could be prosecuted in civil court with a possible penalty of up to a […]

The Rock Store, the popular biker hangout in rural Agoura, received a visit from “American Chopper” stars Paul Teutul Sr., Paul Teutul Jr. and Mikey Teutul last Saturday. The father-and-sons team joined more than 100 motorcycle riders from the local area and from out of town in a ride from the Rock Store to the House of Blues on Sunset […]

Agoura Hills faces hefty clean-up fees

Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Westlake Village will be required to pay what some officials are calling “outrageous” dollar amounts in order to meet strict new water quality regulations governing the pollution at Malibu Creek. Now that the Environmental Protection Agency and Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board have approved bacteria limitations for the creek, cities are estimating their share […]

Last week’s article about alternative fuel vehicles incorrectly stated that Tesla Motors is a British company. The electric car manufacturer is a California company in San Carlos, 15 miles south of San Francisco. The price tag of the vehicle is not $98,000. The base price for 2007 was $89,000 ($100,000 fully loaded) and $92,000 for 2008.

Cold weather bites into area crops

Ventura County farmers found themselves once again at the mercy of Mother Nature as an arctic front engulfed Southern California last weekend. Local ranchers and farmers watched the temperatures plunge and their crops destroyed, prompting Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to declare the area a state of emergency. “We have significant damage out there, but we can’t give a dollar value,” said […]
