Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Movie classics for the season

The Acorn

Christmas in Hollywood Some may feel that the same ol’ classic movies have been aired way too much during the holidays. But others (me among them) take a subtle joy in setting the holiday season with another colorless dose of Jimmy and Cary and Bing. (Granny’s high-octane goose liver eggnog helps.) But these Christmas staples aren’t the only game in […]

Choosing a good wine made easy

Dinner parties—especially during the holiday season—are a relaxing way to share tasty food, enjoy good conversation and spend time with friends and family. For many, bringing a bottle of wine to a dinner is a time-honored way to say thank-you to the hosts for opening their home for the evening. The problem, though, is most people are at a loss […]

No Title

Mel might have his flaws, but don’t we all? And the guy can sure churn out one insanely great action thriller, which is my way of saying I’m sticking with the movie and leaving Mr. Gibson’s personal asides alone. Let’s just say that I wouldn’t want the tabloids getting ahold of my offhours either. Which is also my way of […]

Catchy lyrics, bluesy vocals

MUSIC MAKER—Songwriter Michelle Holmes placed in the top five nationally in the 2006 Indiegrrl Songwriting Competition for her song “Indian Hills,” off the band’s latest CD, “Sexy Epsilon.” She’s shown here with, from left, drummer Doug Forsyth and Steve Pinkney, Holmes’ guitarist and husband.

Eat healthy during the holidays

The biggest challenge we all face during the holidays is getting through them without too much stress. When we’re overextending ourselves, rushing around shopping, engulfed in the details of entertaining, or spending time wrapping gifts or attending parties, we often put our usual routines on hold, and that includes taking the time to feed ourselves and our children properly. All […]
