Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

nfluential theater critic to speak at UCLA

Revered or reviled, there is no denying the vast influence Frank Rich has wielded on American culture. As the former New York Times theater critic, he could make or break a production with a single review. As a New York Times Op-Ed columnist, he turns his keen eye and penetrating writing style to politicians, entertainers and other newsmakers. Rich will […]

Area schools still need funding

On Oct. 13, The Acorn ran “Area schools not in such dire straits after all.” This misleading headline gave the impression that Measure E has cured the financial ills of our school district. Fact: Measure E reduced the financial hemorrhaging to a slow bleeding. The draconian budget cuts of 2003-04 were only partially offset by Measure E. The programs and […]

Village people are a no-show

The residents of the city of Agoura should know their tax dollars are being used to plan and design disturbing private development(s) called Agoura Village. The city of Agoura Hills is seeking to solidify a massive upzoning around Agoura Road that will add hundreds of thousand of square feet of commercial and residential development and serious amounts of traffic pollution […]

Candidate unfairly attacked

When will the slings and arrows of outrageous claims aimed at Todd August cease? Does Rishoff (Nov. 24) and the rest of the “Agoura Machine” enjoy rubbing salt in a man’s wounds and kicking a guy when he is down? No matter how many times the polls show that people want a clean race, too often the results show that […]

Editorial wrong?

You are correct in concluding (Dec.1 Acorn editorial) that the construction of affordable homes has nothing to do with market forces but more with “social considerations.” The Ahmanson Ranch project is a perfect example. Over 20 percent of the housing units in the project were to be “affordable housing” units. As a Mountain View Estates homeowners, I attended a homeowners’ […]

Agoura doesn’t have to copycat

The recent city council election seemed to pit those who are envious of the vast amount of commerce in Calabasas and Westlake Village against those of us who wish Agoura to remain primarily residential with a “small town semi-rural” atmosphere. I recently had the occasion to go to a camera store in Calabasas and it took me 20 minutes to […]

Lowe’s traffic causes concern

I am writing to express my concern regarding the proposed Town Center at Westlake Village. I much prefer the thought of office buildings which attract higher paying jobs and overall much less disruptive traffic than the congestion projected to be generated by the Lowe’s project. Just because the traffic with the Lowe’s plan is not “over capacity” (per the EIR) […]

No Title

Should motorists be ticketed for speeding down fast hills?

Should motorists be ticketed for speeding down fast hills? The question: If a traffic enforcer sits at the base of a hill with a radar gun pointed at motorists headed down slope, would that be considered entrapment, which is illegal? Some roads, such as portions of Kanan Road, Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Borchard Road are very steep and motorists frequently […]
