Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Parents can keep identity of students hidden from military

Throughout the presidential campaign, there has been significant attention to the "No Child Left Behind" Act signed into law by President George Bush in January 2002. Did you know that Section 9528 of the law requires the school district to disclose names, addresses and telephone numbers of high school students (boys and girls) to military recruiters upon request? Parents may […]

Game stolen from Agoura Chargers

I commend The Acorn on referencing the Agoura-Westlake varsity football game on Oct. 15 in its editorial last week. However, it misused Yogi Berra’s quote. Replays on both local and national television programs clearly show that Westlake players were down prior to "fumbling" or lateraling. So, here’s a new quote: "It’s over until the referees blow the call and allow […]

Volunteers express gratitude

Volunteers express gratitude We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the restaurants and local businesses that so generously donated to our Hospice Monte Carlo Night. You made our job much easier by your willingness to contribute gift certificates to your establishments. It is not an easy task to ask businesses to give. We realize you are […]

Multigenerational

This is the new buzzword. It means that for the first time, we have at least four generations working together or at least giving the appearance of doing so. This might be true where you work (or at least it might give that appearance). It can be a management nightmare. Think about it. You’ve got people who don’t look at […]

Midwest Differences

Before attending the recent National Association of College Admission Counseling conference in Milwaukee, I visited colleges in Wisconsin and Minnesota that illustrate some of the tradeoffs students need to think about as they consider different schools. At Beloit, a small liberal arts college, the largest class has 40 students and most have fewer than 30. A professor who teaches a […]

Election Day: We can’t wait until it’s over

Election Day: We can’t wait until it’s over Election Day: We can’t wait until it’s over To those of us who believe in voting the old-fashioned way, going to the polls next Tuesday is as natural as polyester. Some of us actually like punching out our chads—possibly in frustration over the lack of a single candidate who even remotely excites […]

For the record

In last week’s edition of The Acorn, Agoura High School teacher Kristen Marsilio wasn’t mentioned in an article about the new high school bell schedule proposal. Marsilio was the lead teacher with Jason Busby on the proposal. She worked many hours planning and writing the proposal as well as introducing the plan to faculty and school district personnel. She also […]
