Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Relocation of fire station good for some, bad for others

Relocation of fire station good for some, bad for others In the Nov. 6 Acorn there appeared an article "New fire station is coming soon" to the city of Agoura Hills, just north of the 101 Freeway. This article stated that County Fire Station No. 65 is being moved from its current location on Cornell Road to the new location […]

Fire department officials express gratitude

Fire department officials express gratitude During this time of the enormous tragic losses due to the effects of the wildfires in Southern California, the Incident Commanders, on behalf of the 1,600-plus fire service personnel, law enforcement personnel and numerous other public safety members who fought the recent Simi fire, would like to express our thanks and appreciation for the outpouring […]

Traffic planning a disaster in Calabasas

Traffic planning a disaster in Calabasas Work on a landscaped median on Mulholland Highway across from the new A.C. Stelle Middle School has now permanently reduced this highway to a single-lane in each direction. The impacts of this roadwork will now assure that traffic will be jammed solid from Mulholland Drive to Calabasas High School five days a week from […]

Parents’ nightmare

The accident that claimed the life of Eric Ring was on Oct. 25, not Sept. 25, as you indicate in your "For the Record" paragraph on page 10 of last week’s Acorn. My son was a good friend of Eric’s and good friends with the two boys who survived the accident. If he hadn’t been away that weekend, it is […]

Cable company deserves the wrath of city hall

Cable company deserves the wrath of city hall The Agoura Hills City Council should take Adelphia cable company to task because they have intentionally dragged their feet on updating their equipment to provide their captive audience with HDTV. It is difficult to endure Adelphia’s advertisements to their own cable customers, which criticize competing satellite television providers. Not only are the […]

California needs less industry and population

California needs less industry and population So Ray Pearl considers the Ahmanson victory one-sided? I guess if you live in the Conejo and San Fernando Valley and don’t care about the little remaining open space we have, traffic, smog, wildlife and you’re a developer (such as himself), then it was a defeat. It’s time to address some "real" issues here. […]

Long-time resident says goodbye

Goodbye, Agoura Hills. I’m looking over my shoulder with some sadness in my heart. I hate to leave you. Today, you are a beautiful model city. I’m proud of what you good citizens have accomplished since your birthday in 1982. In a small way, I had some part in the growing up phase. But now the vicissitudes of my autumn […]

Accident victim says ‘Thank you’

On Thurs., Oct. 23 at approximately 2:45 p.m. I was in an accident at Canwood Street and Derry Avenue, by NW Rugs. It being what it was, I never got to properly thank all the kind people who came to my aid and the other driver’s aid. The first people I remember seeing were a man and a woman whose […]

If Words Could Talk

By Bill E. Brock English Speak You? I’m so glad that I never had to learn English as a second language. If so, I would say that sentence like this: "Second language English, to learn never had, glad so am I." English is overly complicated. Two many words sound alike but are spelled differently and far to many have different […]

A Clothing Optional Column

Some folks trace their ancestry to Vikings, Pilgrims or Wild West pioneers and other significant or historical forebears. Me, I’m descended from notorious sun-crazed stock. My Bronx, N.Y.-born father loved hiking, ocean swimming, reading, bowling—but most of all, the sun. He also embraced nudism but unfortunately sired two prudes who can barely bring themselves to disrobe for a medical exam. […]
