Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Need new solutions for water supply

We live where no ground water is available. Fact: Without water, nothing. Currently Las Virgenes Municipal Water District moves heaven and earth to get water here, treat it, sell it, and then take it for reuse. Because our area has no place to store water it’s even tougher to have a reliable source. Making highly treated wastewater into drinking water […]

Rain is good, but . . .

“Do we have enough water supply now because of all the local rainstorms we have had recently?” That is a question I have been asked a lot, as a former board member for a local water and wastewater agency. If you live in the Conejo Valley or Calabasas, the answer is “no.” The rains do not increase our available drinking […]

Residents fear housing in the ‘hood

PEER, Protect our Emergency Evacuation Routes, is challenging the city of Agoura Hills’ massive upzonings, (allowing a max of 44 housing units at our busy Driver Avenue corner and allowing a max of 564 housing units at our three local shopping centers on Kanan Road). It’s beyond ridiculous to put any more density at congested Driver and/or Kanan. The city […]

La Reina girls and Super Bowl Jesus

In the grand saga of Conejo Valley, where faith meets finance in an epic showdown, we find ourselves at a crossroads— or perhaps, a Super Bowl commercial break. The impending closure of La Reina, a bastion of faith-based education for over half a century, juxtaposed against the Catholic Church’s decision to throw $17.5 million into the Super Bowl ad pot, […]

Ode to sadness

My older brother David died two years ago after spending 35 years—half of his life—in an Oklahoma prison for driving drunk on the Oklahoma Turnpike and hitting a car head-on, killing three out of the four family members inside. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he returned with drug and alcohol addictions and an altered sense of reality. He had […]

Questions Agoura Hills housing plan

A recent letter writer mentioned the plan to construct affordable housing units on the roofs of Vons and Ralphs in Agoura Hills. The letter writer expressed his view that this plan is a very bad idea. I agree and I also feel that most people in Agoura Hills and Oak Park strongly oppose this plan. While this is purely anecdotal, […]

Acorn backs Scouts BSA troop

On behalf of Scouts BSA Troop 127 of Agoura Hills and the Las Virgenes Scouting Alumni Association, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you and The Acorn for your generous donation of ad space to the Scouting for Veterans program for 2023. Your contribution has made a significant impact on our mission to support homeless veterans in our community. We […]

School closure and ‘grieving families’

Our daughter was over the moon when admitted to La Reina Middle School’s honors program. Less than two years later, she was the first girl in their history to get to State for the National Geography Bee, which selects the 100 top-scoring geography students out of around 900,000 California middle schoolers. That year, 90 of the 100 were boys. She […]

Says students were an ‘inspiration’

My time at La Reina has never been a job. It has been, in the purest sense of the word, my vocation. In helping my girls find their voice, I found my purpose. In my 18 years at La Reina, my students have been such an inspiration— pushing themselves beyond what they thought possible, always striving to do their best […]
