Young reader has right idea

My name is Koutn. I am 13 years old and I am in the seventh grade at Mariposa School of Global Education. Some of my favorite things to do are to play water polo and make movies. I have a passion for music. I also like the outdoors.

My class at school often goes on hikes. I treasure this opportunity since I know that most kids do not have a chance to go on hikes during school. What I enjoy most about hiking is exploring the wilderness in the mountains. I’ve seen animals like hawks, salamanders, skinks and interesting birds. I’ve also seen cool cliffs.

But one thing I’ve noticed on these hikes is that there is a lot of trash, and it seems like some hikers are not treating the land well.

An organization called Santa Monica Mountains Fund is focused on keeping hiking trails natural and preserving the wildlife that lives there. This is a cause that I think is worthy of attention.

That’s why I am writing this letter. I think you should raise awareness for Santa Monica Mountains Fund since there is wildlife that should be able to thrive, and hikers should be more aware of keeping it clean.

One time when I was on a hike I went by a creek. It was a nice creek with water trickling down the rocks and algae growing along the water path. There were several fish swimming in this charming creek, but there was also disgusting trash floating on top of the creek bed. There were empty chip bags, empty water bottles and other pieces of plastic clinging to the rocks and sticking out of the dirt.

I was surprised when I saw this. There was so much of it and it looked dirty. It was weird to think that people would litter like this after all of the information out there about the consequences of littering.

People who spend time around wildlife should be more conscious of what’s happening in our environment.

It’s nice to hike, but we should pay attention to what we’re doing. People won’t enjoy hiking if there is trash everywhere; it smells terrible, and wildlife is dying off.

That’s why it’s important to raise awareness, not just for people who enjoy hiking, but to help the plants and animals, too.
