Yiddish theater at Skirball Center

The California Institute for Yiddish Culture and Language in association with the Skirball Cultural Center will present “The Gift of Yiddish Theater” from Dec. 16 to 21 at the Skirball, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles. For a detailed schedule, visit www.yiddishinstitute.org or call (310) 745-1190 after Fri., Sept. 15.

Spanning all genres, from religious parodies to musical comedy to avant-garde tragedy, Yiddish theater transcends all social and geographic boundaries.

The program kicks off on Sat., Dec. 16 with a gala evening of “Tales and Songs from the Megillah of Itzik Manger” featuring Mike Burstyn. The concert is presented in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Israeli Yiddish musical “Megillah.” The tongue-incheek work, by the Yiddish bard Itzik Manger, is based on the Book of Esther and was popularized by the Burstyn family, luminaries of Yiddish theater.

A one-day immersion program scheduled for Sun., Dec. 17 may be taken alone or followed by daily morning language classes. Afternoon lectures and workshops explore diverse aspects of Yiddish theater and music.
