Worse noises to deal with than jet aircraft

While I sit in my backyard today, I started thinking about Drew Fountaine’s letter to the editor regarding jet noise over Oak Park. I sit in my backyard relaxing a lot during the summer when I am not working.

The noises that I hear besides the birds are lawn mowers and leaf blowers. Almost every day I hear them.

During other times of the day I can hear cars and motorcycles revving their engines and driving fast through the neighborhood, especially late at night.

Occasionally I will hear an airplane fly over but not very often. Yes, I am tuned into airplane noise since I occasionally fly those jets into LAX on the new arrival (path).

Funny thing is—I cross over Oak Park at almost 2 miles in altitude with the engine power at idle. The arrival is designed so we make a continuous idle power descent for fuel savings and noise abatement. I cannot say that all airplanes will be at idle power 100 percent of the time but the majority probably are.

I think there are a lot more external noises than airplanes. If there is airplane noise it may last for 30 seconds or so. How long do you listen to a lawn mower or leaf blower for?
