Women are focus of art exhibit

Ventura County Museum of History and Art presents

How do artists depict women? Has that depiction changed over the last 100 years? The portrayal of women in art will be explored as the Ventura County Museum of History and Art presents the exhibit "Powerful Beauty: Images of Ventura County Women" through Aug. 31.

"The beautiful traditional portraits of Ventura County women that belong to our museum really caught my eye," said museum curator Anne Graumlich. "I wanted to compare them with depictions of women created by contemporary Ventura County artists." Graumlich selected new works by 23 county artists and exhibits these paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings with a dozen works from the museum’s collection.

These new works reveal an expanded definition of what it means to be beautiful.

Along with finding beauty where it has been found before (in young women and in young mothers with children, for instance), the artists find it in women at work, in women facing adversity, and in women as they age.

The museum will present several free special events in conjunction with the exhibit, including "The Art of Aging" on Sun., July 27 with Ojai artist Alice Matzkin that will explore the power, beauty and courage of women as they go through the aging process.

The Ventura County Museum of History and Art is at 100 E. Main St. in downtown Ventura. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tues. through Sun. Admission ranges from $1 to $4. For more information, please call (805) 653-0323, ext. 10.
