Why so many break-ins?

As a frequent reader of the Sheriff’s Blotter column in The Acorn, I am continually aghast at the high number of reports of car break-ins—absolutely amazing.

For instance, this week’s column reported 13 car thefts out of 19 items.

Three of those thefts were from unlocked cars and another three were from cars that had no signs of forced entry.

All of the thefts clearly had stuff in clear sight, not items that could have been stored in glove compartments or something similar.

Wake up, folks. Leaving stuff in plain sight in cars is an open invitation to thefts. Then, too, leaving cars unlocked just makes it easier for the bad guys.

If you truly have to leave stuff in your car, at least put in into the trunk out of sight and do that before you get to the final parking spot; if they see you stowing stuff they will know right where to look and save them time.

Car break-ins are not 100 percent preventable but the frequency can be reduced significantly by removing the temptation and the opportunity.
