The United States Junior National baseball team placed five of its athletes on the 11-member 2001 Pan American All-Tournament team according to a statement released July 10 by the tournament’s organizing body.
Recent Westlake High School graduate Mike Nickeas, a catcher, was named a tournament all-star, and heading into the semifinal round (the U.S., ranked no. 2, vs. no. 3, Panama) Nickeas led all hitters with a .577 average (15-26), runs scored (16) and slugging percentage (1.038). The four-year Warrior star also was tied for the team-lead in runs batted in with 13 and doubles with six.
Nickeas led Westlake to two CIF championship finals. He will play for Georgia Tech next year.
