After 20 years of service on the Agoura Hills City Council, Mayor Denis Weber has a new list of goals he wants to tackle if elected to his sixth term in office.

Weber is one of five candidates running for three seats on the panel. He and Councilmembers Harry Schwarz and Bill Koehler are seeking reelection. Challengers are Chris Anstead and Meril Platzer. The election is Nov. 5.

Weber was first elected to the City Council in 1993. Over the course of two decades he has achieved many of his goals, including the development of the city’s civic center and library, new horse trails in Old Agoura, business development along the freeway corridor, and the acquisition and preservation of open space.

“Horse trails in Old Agoura were needed and have become a reality, but even more are needed,” Weber said.

He said he’s also proud to have been a member of the City Council that stopped a large school from being built on 71 acres of land near Old Agoura.

The land was sold this year to a developer who has agreed to build 15 custom equestrian homes on 20 acres and deed the rest of the land to the city as permanent open space.

A vibrant business community has been a focus for Weber over the years.

“As always, the biggest issues are still the economy and how we deal with the fallout that affects our families and local merchants,” he said in a statement. “We must be mindful of what these individuals are going through. They have invested their money, time and vision in trying to make their business work, and I’ve pledged to listen to their concerns and work to initiate logical responses to them in the form of initiatives by the staff and council.”

Weber said he is proud of his fiscal conservatism. He is equally happy that the city’s partnership with Las Virgenes Unified School District has grown over the years.

He said the city’s partnerships with the school district, sheriff’s department, neighboring cities and the Hilton Foundation, among others, “are critical to the region, and we’ve been able to capitalize on these partners in doing so many wonderful things for our town.”

Fiscal responsibility also led to the completion of new overpasses at Kanan and Reyes Adobe roads, which have improved traffic flow, he said.

“We’ve had balanced budgets and reserves for many years, and that has enabled us to weather the fiscal storms that so many cities have faced, but we have always been mindful of what’s important to the life of a city and the quality of that life,” he said.

Weber said if he is reelected he plans to continue to work on all facets of the community.

“Elected officials can never rest on their accomplishments, as there are always more things to do or to enhance the things we’ve already done,” he said. “(It’s important to) never get complacent but adjust where need be and make the difference that people expect of us.”

Public safety has always been a priority for Weber, who said Agoura’s strong relationship with the sheriff’s department has helped the city maintain a low crime rate.

Weber has raised more than $5,200 for his campaign. He is being endorsed by his colleagues on the Agoura Hills City Council, Westlake Village City Council, LVUSD Board of Education, members of the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and business owners, leaders of churches and temples, and individual residents.

“What’s really special are the people from Old Agoura,” he said. “I’ve been part of that area since 1986, as I’ve had my horses there from then until now, and I think they see the concern I have for their lifestyle but still want common sense approaches to things.”

Weber served in the California Army National Guard for six years and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. He was a Cubmaster for Agoura Hills Pack 227 for five years, and then assistant scoutmaster and chaplain for Troop 775 in Westlake Village.

He served as the commanding officer of the Langley Division of the U. S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps for five years and worked on the board of governors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Conejo and Las Virgenes for the past 12 years.

Weber has lived in Agoura Hills since 1985. He has been married to Laurie for 28 years and has four children and a granddaughter. He works as senior vice president of a bank.
