Water issue under examination

The Conejo/Las Virgenes Future Foundation will host a free seminar to provide the public with information on how the statewide water crisis is impacting the region and local water usage.

The seminar will be conducted at the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District headquarters tonight, Thurs., Sept. 18 at 7:30 a.m.

Jimmie Cho, the water district’s director of resource conservation and public outreach, will be the featured speaker at the event. Fran Brough, executive director of the foundation, said Cho will explain the cycle of the local water supply, why the state of California is in crisis and how residents and businesses can work together to make conservation measures effective.

In response to statewide drought conditions, the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, along with other regional water regulatory agencies, implemented mandatory conservation measures.

As of July 1, Las Virgenes customers must not irrigate between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and washing down driveways or patios with a hose is forbidden, according to information on the water district website (www.lvmwd.com). Customers are also being asked to skip a day of watering their landscaping each week. Restaurants will only serve water by request, and hotels must offer customers staying multiple nights the option to reuse their linens and towels. Las Virgenes customers are also being asked to replace thirsty lawns with water-resistant plants.

Brough said the water talk meshes with the foundation’s mission to provide information to local residents on issues that affect the present and future of the region. A nonprofit “think tank,” the Future Foundation will blend its monthly organizational meetings with public information programs on a variety of topics during the year. The goal, Brough said, is to encourage people to get involved.

Refreshments will be served at the meeting. Membership in the Future Foundation is not necessary to attend. Since seating is limited, reservations are requested. To reserve a spot, call (818) 880-1054.
