Agoura Hills resident Jess Thomas was honored as the May Citizen of the Month by the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District board of directors at their May meeting.

Thomas has been an area resident since the 1960s and has served as president of the Old Agoura Homeowners Association since the early 1980s.

In honoring Thomas, the board cited his environmental stewardship in raising awareness for the need to protect the region’s watersheds and his efforts to expand park space and opportunities for equestrian activities in the area.

Thomas played a key role in the creation of Old Agoura Park, a public facility with a playground and recreational areas.

Through the efforts of the Old Agoura Homeowners Association, Thomas helped to link equestrian trails, preserve local equestrian spaces and open new areas to recreation. He was a supporter for the acquisitions of Ahmanson Ranch and King Gillette Ranch as public spaces.

The Citizen of the Month recognition program will be conducted through June in observation of the water district’s 50th anniversary.

Honorees are nominated for their achievements in the fields of conservation, education, environmental stewardship or legacy contributions to the community.

Las Virgenes Municipal Water District serves a population of some 65,000 in Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Westlake Village and adjacent unincorporated areas of western Los Angeles County.
