Watch your speed

One night last week, I was awakened from a deep sleep by the dreadful and unfortunately all too familiar sound of a car crashing. It sounded as though the car had careened into the creek bed just behind our house, first hitting something like a tree.

My daughter-in-law and I ran to see if we could be of help. We discovered an 18-year-old driver walking dazed in the street. He was walking, so we all assumed that he was unhurt. I have not heard of his condition since that night. His BMW was definitely demolished. Piuma Road was strewn with litter and large white containers.

The Wildlife Way Station was in the process of paving their driveway, so no cars could be parked at the facility. Instead they had to be parked on Piuma Road. Two innocent people had their vehicles demolished by this overzealous driver and his out-of-control speeding. It turns out that one of the vehicles destroyed was the mammal rescue truck, ergo the white containers. This probably caused the way station to be unable to rescue marine mammals.

A similar accident happened about a month ago at the very same location of Piuma Road and Malibu Meadows Drive. Since I have lived here, I have witnessed approximately 12 such accidents resulting in at least four deaths. My family hears speeding vehicles and screeching brakes way too often.

How can this speeding along Piuma Road by cars and motorcycles be stopped? Can speed bumps be installed? Can the deputies patrol the area more frequently? Monte Nido is a rustic, rural community. The residents have moved here for the peace and quiet natural to our setting. There are animals of every kind here both domestic and wild.

This out of control speeding must be stopped.
