Warrior girls beaten by Newbury Park

as Panthers set league mark for wins

While the Newbury Park High girls’ basketball team has a record 30 consecutive Marmonte League victories, the team’s main goal is to continue the streak.

And win the Panthers did last Friday at home, as they beat the Westlake Warriors, 67-30, to erase a record set by Thousand Oaks back in 1991-93.

"I know it’s a streak and now Newbury Park has it and I am pleased for the team ‘cause they worked hard," said Panther head coach Nori Parvin. "I’m just pleased for the record for the girls. That will be something they can remember.

"The three seniors and Ashley (Adams) and even Emily Cameron, every team she’s played in she’s been a winner, 24 on JV and then 12 last year. Cassandra (Harris), Alex (Mallen) and Rachael (Hever), they started the string with Ashley."

Newbury Park was led by Racheal Hever’s 13 points and Brynn Cameron’s 11 points. Jennifer Schlinz led Westlake in scoring with eight points.

The Panthers got off to a 21-6 lead. Scoring only two points in the second quarter, Westlake fell behind 40-14 at halftime.

Newbury Park (14-4, 4-0 in the Marmonte League) was to face Moorpark on Wednesday. Westlake plays Agoura at home tomorrow at 6 p.m.

In the Warriors other game last week they were topped by Moorpark, 53-47, on Wednesday as Schlinz made 14 points and Shie added 12.

For Westlake, the loss to Newbury Park gave the team an 8-7 overall and 0-3 record in the Marmonte League. Warrior head coach John D’Agostin said his team had taken the Newbury Park loss about as well as could be expected.

"That was the worst we‘ve been beaten all year. Our kids were definitely upset, though not as much as those losses when they get away (late in the game), those are difficult losses.

"I know our kids have a lot of respect for Newbury Park. Nori (Parvin) has a great team and she’s a class person. We’re hoping that someday we’ll be able to play with them."

D’Agostin said he was impressed with Megan Shie in the Newbury Park game.

"Megan played hard and handled the pressure. She played pretty well against Alex Mallen. She played just about every minute and I was impressed."

Prior to the Westlake game Newbury Park beat Simi Valley, 68-56, and Royal, 78-47. Against the Pioneers, Harris scored 22 points and Brynn Cameron tallied 19 points. Against the Royal Highlanders Harris got 25 points and Brynn Cameron scored 18.

Regarding Schlinz, the Warriors’ leading scorer, D’Agostin said that she’s struggled a little.

"She is a good outside shooter and can penetrate," he said. "She was our leading scorer as a freshman, the best defender on her. Her states might not show it, but she has played well in our first three games. She will get back on track."

D’Agostin anticipated that with games against Simi Valley, Royal and Agoura that this would be a long week for Westlake.

"I think our kids are going to respond," he said. "They’re positive and working hard. They are confident about their chances. The first couple of games we were competitive.

"Agoura is a good team. Agoura beat us in the Burroughs tourney and we were missing a couple of the girls. With everybody back, we hope we can be more competitive with Agoura."
