Volunteers asked to join group that raises money to fight cancer

The Conejo Valley Guild of the Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation (JCCF) at UCLA is currently conducting its annual membership drive, which will culminate with a Champagne Membership Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wed., Oct. 16 at Wood Ranch Golf Club, 310 Wood Ranch Pkwy., Simi Valley. The cost is $20 and reservations are required by Fri., Oct. 4.

The guild’s mission is to support cancer research by providing funds for the first year of research on a promising new idea or theory. This inaugural year of funding is called a "Seed Grant" and costs $30,000. According to the guild, governmental institutions do not provide a scientist or research doctor with this money.

After the study proves to have potential, the researcher may then apply to the National Institute of Health for funds to continue the study in the laboratories at UCLA.

"We need more people in the Conejo Valley to be aware of what we at JCCF are trying to accomplish," said a guild spokeswoman.

Checks payable to JCCF/UCLA may be mailed to P.O. Box 7742, Thousand Oaks, CA 91359. For more information, please call either of the following by Sun., Oct. 6: Marilyn Leftgoff at (805) 373-1807 or Margarita Horwitz at (805) 499-2569.
