Viewpoint stages classic play ‘Tempest’

Viewpoint School’s Conservatory of Theater presented three performances of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” last month in the school’s Carlson Family Theater.

A spokesperson from the Calabasas school described the play as “a tale of magic, suspense and romance set against the backdrop of a deserted island” with an original score that “evoked the sounds of stormy seas.”

In “The Tempest,” Prospero, the wrongfully deposed Duke of Milan, played by Sid Sosin of Los Angeles, and his daughter Miranda, portrayed by Amanda Martin of Calabasas, are cast off to an island. There, Propsero indulges in magic, raising a tempest to shipwreck the vessel of his usurper brother.

With the help of his spirit, Ariel, Mallin Alter of Woodland Hills, Prospero creates the scenario to take back his proper station in life. In the end, Prospero finds that “the rarer action is in virtue than in vengeance.”

“This a play about reclaiming what is rightfully yours and letting go of all that is no longer provident,” said Julianne De Sal, chairperson of the school’s theater and dance departments. De Sal directed the play.

The production also featured Viewpoint’s Conservatory of Dance and original musical arrangements by Bill Brendle.
