Veteran’s story told in new book





Agoura Hills resident David Goldberg served in the U.S. First Army, 79th Field Artillery in World War II. He was a master sergeant and in charge of 12 men in a communications squad. At the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, Goldberg had been in the Army for five years.

Goldberg was awarded five battle stars for participating in all five major battles of the European Campaign, including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Silver Star for bravery at the Battle of St-Lo. He helped liberate Buchenwald concentration camp in 1945. He is a lifetime member of Jewish War Veterans and served as a commander of JWV posts in both New York and Los Angeles.

Goldberg was born in New York on July 20, 1917. He married Joyce in 1945. They had two children, both married now with children of their own. Goldberg lives in the Agoura Hills Senior Retreat.

Goldberg’s story, as well those of other soldiers, is told in the book “Men of Honor: American GIs in the Jewish Holocaust” by Jeff Donaldson.
