Ventura County to receive FEMA funds for its programs

Ventura County will be receiving Emergency Food and Shelter federal funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to supplement emergency food and shelter programs throughout Ventura County.

Funding for 2005 has yet to be determined, but last year this program awarded $436,000 to local agencies.

Board members from the United Way of Ventura County, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Jewish Family Services, and other designated nonprofits and volunteers will determine how the emergency funds are awarded and distributed.

Grant terms stipulate that local agencies chosen to receive funds must be: 1) Private voluntary nonprofits or units of government; 2) Have an accounting system; 3) Practice nondiscrimination; 4) Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; and 5) Must have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds should call Nancy Older, United Way of Ventura County, at (805) 485-6288, ext. 227 for an application.

Applications must be submitted to the United Way by noon Fri., Jan. 14.
