Valley Jewish community to celebrate Israel’s independence




"Celebration 54," a festive, family-oriented community celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, will be presented beginning with a picnic dinner at 5:30 p.m. on Tues., April 16 at the Bernard Milken Jewish Community Campus, 22622 Vanowen St., West Hills.


At 7 p.m. a special program will open with a short memorial service in honor of Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, and will transition into the festive Independence Day celebration, which will include Israeli music performances, a children’s choir, candlelighting ceremony, blowing of the shofar and raising of the Israeli flag.


Local synagogue youth will honor historic Israeli heroes Golda Meir, David Ben Gurion and others. Israeli dancing will follow the program.


Among those expected to participate are Councilmen Jack Weiss and Dennis Zine and L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.


The event is sponsored by the Jewish Federation Valley Alliance, the West Valley Rabbinic Task Force, Valley synagogues, schools and other Jewish organizations.
