Turn your vacation into a spiritual journey

If you are looking for a vacation to lift your spirits, you may be interested in visiting some of the world’s most inspiring and revered spiritual sites in the country. Where can you see these sites? Surprisingly, they are in Washington, D.C.

The modern museums at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center offer an environment for people of all ages and denominations to explore spirituality through modern technology.

In the museums’ interactive galleries, visitors learn about religions throughout the world and enjoy stories of the Creation from various cultures. The "architecturally stunning" Cultural Center features regularly displayed art treasures from the Vatican Museums. There is also a room about John Paul II with gifts from dignitaries around the world and photos and memorabilia from his life.

"Many visitors have found this unique spiritual journey to be an adventure of a lifetime," according to a Cultural Center spokesperson. To learn more, visit www.jp2cc.org.

A new exhibit is paying tribute to "the greatest generation" by showing how their faith helped sustain them during the war years. Now on display at the museums at the Cultural Center, the collection includes an exhibition, symposium and educational film festival.

The exhibit, "Faith of Our Fathers and Mothers," includes items related to military chaplains of all faiths and in particular, chaplains during World War II. Artifacts include pieces of uniforms and service booklets.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is 10 triptychs that were used as portable altarpieces on ships and in the field of battle. The exhibition also features a chalice made by a ship’s machinist for use onboard ship. Other items include religious articles of faith that soldiers took into battle.

The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 7.
