Trail closures up ahead

Trails in the national parkland at Cheeseboro/Palo Comado Canyons will close intermittently during April and May to make way for the demolition and removal of a surplus water tank and pumping station.

The closures will be limited to weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Triunfo Sanitation District will remove the tank and pump station as part of an agreement with the National Park Service and other agencies.

The facilities were built in 1959 at the request of comedian Bob Hope, who had hoped to build thousands of homes in the surrounding area as part of a masterplanned community.

In the late 1990s, Washington Mutual Bank had planned to build 3,050 homes, two golf courses and a shopping center in the upper Las Virgenes open space, but instead the land was purchased by the state for $150 million and turned into public parkland.

During the trail closures, large trucks will haul salvaged materials along the canyon trails.

The walking and biking paths can be accessed through Cheeseboro Canyon in Agoura Hills, and the Doubletree and Smoketree trailheads in Oak Park.

For their safety, visitors are asked to stay off these trails when closed signs are posted, said Kate Kuykendall, spokesperson for the National Park Service.

The China Flat and Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve trailheads will remain open.
