Toxic scare is a smokescreen

Mary Wiesbrock’s alarmist letter regarding the Heschel West site is a bizarre amalgam of concern and attack, neither of which helps our school or our community. Does she really think that we or our neighbors in Old Agoura would put our children in harm’s way? Does she not understand that making unsubstantiated claims about toxic waste could adversely impact property values even if the claims are not true?

The truth is that Heschel West and many other organizations have studied this landfill carefully and have concluded that our land is safe.

If it weren’t, then wouldn’t it be incumbent upon the city of Agoura Hills to evacuate Old Agoura or for the city of Calabasas to evacuate the Lost Hills area, both of which are closer to the landfill than the Heschel West property?

It is past time for people with real and legitimate concerns about the Heschel West school site to engage in constructive discussion about their concerns. Rumor and innuendo have no place in public discourse and are a disservice to the community and an embarrassment to the purveyour.

It is time to move forward.
