Tickets are a necessary fact of life

Regarding “Are the cops ticket-happy?” (Jan. 22), I’m not sure I can properly articulate my complete disagreement with Julie Freeman’s letter regarding speed and traffic traps. So I will begin by addressing her opening sentence. To quote, “We are all shocked by the huge increase in traffic traps as well as speed traps in our neighborhoods.”

I am curious to the “we” she is referring to because she certainly isn’t speaking for me and, hopefully, other community members as well. I must say I wish I had her memory retention as she listed six speed traps in utmost detail right down to the cross streets they were located, the number of officers at each location and even the direction each violator was heading.

I have seen these types of letter in The Acorn but, thankfully, they are in the minority. There is a reason why laws exist and a reason why mandatory traffic checks exist. I bet quite a few of us have seen people speeding down our streets, cellphone attached to the ear and texting as if no one is noticing. All it takes is a split second of looking away from the road or diverting our attention in some other way and a tragedy can happen.

No, Ms. Freeman, our law enforcement officers are not out to harass us nor is it due to city coffers being down. You mentioned that you and your friends have all received tickets, the fees are exorbitant and you worry about losing your license, but may I respectfully offer a suggestion: may we all obey our traffic laws and extend courtesy to all the fellow traveler we share the roads and freeways with. Problem solved.

To our men and women in law enforcement, I say thanks for being there for us.
