Thinks editorial backfired

The Acorn editorial staff believes it is inappropriate for a deputy sheriff to show adolescents a rifle at a school event?

Funny, when I was a firefighter, we routinely let visiting children handle an ax. And FBI data shows more murders are committed with blunt objects than with rifles.

Moreover, children as young as 12 can and do legally hunt with rifles of the same caliber as the one the deputy was holding in the photo. And they can do so without adult supervision, at age 16.

So why the fuss?

Drunk drivers kill thousands every year, yet we had drivers ed in school. And what about industrial arts classes in junior high, with all those hammers and sharp chisels?

The above-mentioned editorial was just another attempt to shame adults who acquaint youngsters with the responsible use of firearms.

God bless our sheriff’s department for showing youth that guns are merely tools—just like cars and hammers.
