Thinking smart about clinical trials




The Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara will host a free seminar titled “Clinical Trial Participation: Deciding Whether to Take Part” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tues., April 16 at 530 Hampshire Road, Westlake Village.

This presentation will provide a general overview of clinical trials for patients, their family members and friends. It will cover the different types of clinical trials and the process of navigating one from start to finish.

Topics will include: finding a clinical trial, determining study eligibility, enrolling in a study, and requirements of a patient while on a clinical trial.

The first speaker, Chela-Rene Spaargaren, is a clinical research nurse conducting trials with the medical team at the UCLA–Westlake Village Hematology and Oncology office.

She has a nursing degree from Mount St. Mary’s College and a dual bachelor’s degree in kinesiology/ biomechanics and Spanish from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The next speaker, Dr. Shahryar

Ashouri, is a physician with UCLA’s Community Hematology and Oncology Group in Westlake Village and Simi Valley. He completed both his medical school and hematology-oncology training at USC.
