Theater drums up an African folktale

Performances To Grow On will present “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters” by the Dallas Children’s Theater at 7 p.m. Fri., Feb. 17 at the Scherr Forum Theatre, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks.

Playwright Karen Abbot tells the story through narration, African dance, drumming, song and some audience participation. The show is intended for ages 6 through adult.

In John Steptoe’ s award-winning Cinderella tale, the maidens across the land are invited to meet the African king, who desires a wife.

This retelling of an African story from Zimbabwe was inspired by a folktale collected by G.M. Theal and published in 1895 in his book “ Kaffir Folktales.” The names of the characters are from the Shona language.

Reserved tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children, and are available at the box office.
