The unkindest coot of all



 

It’s probably not fair for humans to critique how wildlife raise their young. It’s not as if we don’t hear harrowing tales of aberrant behavior on the part of human parents.

Still, it’s hard to stand mute while a drama unfolds before you, in this case among coots on a lake in rural Agoura. Chicken-shaped, coots are black with white pointed beaks and oversize white legs with clawed feet.
