Ventura County’s greatest discus thrower has eyes on state championship

TECHNIQUE—Oak Park’s Robbie Otal, who will attend Princeton, throws the discus during practice.
Robbie Otal’s ascent to the top of Mount Olympus started when he was 14 years old.
Otal was 5-foot-5, 130 pounds as an Oak Park High freshman.
He was just a kid in the throwing pit, trying to stand out among the giants of track and field.
“I couldn’t compete with anybody,” he said. “I was super small, but I still loved the technique part. I just stayed true to my form.”
