The holidays are when scammers go to work

The sheriff’s department advises citizens to be aware of the many scams that are common during the holiday season, a time when victims are less suspecting.
Advance payment scam
In this scam, someone offers to pay a victim for goods or services they have found on the Internet, usually in an advertisement, website or post. Correspondence ensues, a deal is struck and the scammer sends a legitimate-looking check ahead of time, typically in excess of the agreed upon amount.
