Jan. 1 is supposed to be when recreational marijuana can legally be sold and consumed in California, but the 2017 voter-approved law that permitted the growing and purchasing of pot for personal use—starting next month—has landed with a thud. In addition to a state license, retailers need approval from their local jurisdictions to begin operations. So far, no cities in the local area have given permission for the sale of recreational marijuana.

Port Hueneme has the only two licensees in Ventura County. Both are medicinal pot retailers.

As of Wednesday, the state Bureau of Cannabis Control had issued 148 licenses for adult-use and medicinal pot. Not all are retailers. Some licensees are distributors or testing laboratories. . . . Stay tuned.
