Teens donate books to Boys & Girls club

Calabasas High School boys’ and girls’ basketball players will deliver 2,500 gently-used books from 3:30 to 5 p.m. tomorrow, March 20 to the Boys & Girls Club of West Valley, 7245 Remmet Ave., Canoga Park.

The high school basketball players will arrive in their athletic gear and share their love of reading and basketball with the more than 100 children who regularly attend the afterschool program.

The athletes will read and run a basketball clinic with the youths and help the children pick out books to take home and keep.

The event came about through the efforts of twin sisters Emily and Lauren Levinson, 17-year-old juniors at Calabasas High. They have been reading weekly with underprivileged children for more than four years.

Recognizing the need to recycle books and get them into the hands of those who need them, the sisters launched a book drive and collected more than 2,500 books from the Calabasas community.

The sisters have a brother on the Calabasas freshman basketball team who told them the athletes were looking for a meaningful service project and were able to assist the girls in distributing the books.

The athletes are under the guidance of head coach Jon Palarz.
