Teen to represent diabetes chapter

Agoura Hills resident Brandon Kosikov, 16, has been selected by the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) Los Angeles chapter to represent California at the JDRF 2013 Children’s Congress in Washington, D.C., from July 8 through 10.

Brandon will join 150 other children from around the country to meet with their members of Congress and discuss the need to continue supporting research into curing type 1 diabetes.

Brandon, an honor student, has never missed a day of school or arrived late for class. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 14.

Brandon and his friends founded a group called Living on Insulin to raise money for JDRF. They designed and sold bracelets imprinted with the slogan, “Dia- Beat-This,” to raise more than $3,500 for the organization.

The teen plays varsity soccer and also snowboards, wakeboards and plays golf. He hopes to become a sports agent.

The event, held every other summer, will once again be led by JDRF international chairman Mary Tyler Moore and will include congressional visits by the delegates and a Senate hearing, during which Moore along with select delegates and advocates will testify on the need for continued funding for diabetes research.
