Agoura High School student Anna Johnson was chosen to join students from around the country in attending the STEM program at the United States Naval Academy.

Selection to attend the June program is based on academic excellence, leadership, community service and athleticism.

Up to 6,000 applications are submitted each year, out of which 200 applicants are chosen.

The 15-year-old sophomore will take part in a trip to the National Air and Space Museum and a tour of Washington D.C.

She will also study engineering disasters like the Titanic and Ford Pinto. Other classes will cover biometrics, computers and coding, cryptography, electronics, forensics and robotics.

All participants will stay on campus, sharing the same living and dining facilities used by academy midshipmen.

Participants will also receive guidance from camp counselors, who are midshipmen, and learn about the Naval Academy.

“My father, my greatest and earliest role model, has inspired me to pursue the study of science at the Naval Academy,” Anna said.

“The idea of serving your country relentlessly and with the highest degree of courage is daunting. But that’s why I’m attracted to it. Studying STEM at the Naval Academy is fulfilling my greatest dreams: serving a greater community and learning how to change the world in a way that excites me,” she said.
