Soprano Sara Jean Ford, cellist Andrew Janss and violinist Elise Goodman will represent Thousand Oaks when six young classical musicians of Southern California will be featured during the 2001 New West Symphony Discovery Artists Concert scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 20 at Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.

Each soloist will be accompanied by the New West Symphony, and the concert will include the premiere of an original work by composer-pianist Justin Messina of Ventura who will perform the solo piano part.

Prior to the concert, jazz groups from the Thousand Oaks and Adolfo Camarillo high schools will entertain in the Kavli Theatre lobby.

During the finale, specially chosen New West Youth Symphony All Stars will join the professional musicians onstage, and the evening will close with a performance outdoors by the Mariachi Juvenil Azteca de Camarillo.

The Discovery Artists Concert, sponsored by the New West Symphony, annually gives talented young musicians, who are selected through intensive auditions, the rare and coveted opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra.

Soprano Ford, a 1999 graduate of Newbury Park High School, starred in last summer’s Young Artists production of "Grease."

Violinist Goodman of Thousand Oaks performed with the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in 1997 and was the first concertmaster of Disney’s Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra on the Disney Channel.

Cellist Janss, an honor student at Viewpoint School and on the Junior Statesman of America debate team, is a member of the American Youth Symphony in Los Angeles and toured South Africa with the New England Youth Ensemble.

Discovery Artists Concert tickets are $8 to $19, and are available at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Box Office or by calling (800) NEW-WEST.
