Students use essays to express feelings about cancer

As if dealing with the pandemic wasn’t enough, many area high school students struggled with a cancer diagnosis during the past year: Either they received the bad news or family member did.

The act of writing has proven to be good medicine, and each year the Thousand Oaks-based Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/ Santa Barbara invites students to take part in the organization’s “Dear Cancer, it’s me . . .” essay contest as a way to help heal.
